FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Residents of Old Wilmington Adopt an Alley

Residents of Old Wilmington, Inc (ROW) has received all Certificates of Appropriateness (COAs) necessary to go forward with the continued beautification of Wilkinson Alley.  Large flower containers donated by the City of Wilmington, and filled with seasonal flowers purchased by ROW, were put in place several weeks ago, and recently two large pyracantha were added.  Wilkinson Alley also has several hanging baskets and additional potted containers to show off flowers, plants and vines. Committee members regularly pick up alley debris and water plants.

Attractive period lighting fixtures have been purchased, and will be installed in the very near future. Wrought iron alley signage is being fabricated to add to the ambiance.  Property owners have been very welcoming, cooperative, and enthusiastic about the alley enhancement.  City staff members, Maggie O’Connor and Wendy Latimer, have been particularly helpful in guiding the resident group which is led by Chairperson, Catherine Ackiss.

The Residents of Old Wilmington organization is the first participating group to adopt an alley in the City’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Downtown Services Adopt-an-Alley program.  Once lighting and signage is in place, the ROW organization plans to have a ribbon cutting to celebrate this contribution to downtown Wilmington.
